Project Description:
Determine whether the Español collection at PPLD is meeting the needs/wants of the Spanish speaking patrons.
Just over 7% of the population of El Paso County, Colorado speaks Spanish in the home (45,526 people). (https://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/...acts.xhtml) The turnover rate for the adult materials in the Español collection is much lower than the turnover rate for the general adult materials. The juvenile Spanish language materials have higher use than the adult materials, but that use is still much lower than the turnover rate for the general juvenile collection.
Question Statement:
Are we missing the boat in terms of the contents of the Español collection and are there other factors that contribute to the lack of usage (lack of experience with the library, fear of the library if seen as a govt institution by non-citizens, etc)?
Why Statement:
Gaining information to answer this question will help the Pikes Peak Library District focus resources on a collection that appeals to Spanish speakers in the community, as well as highlighting messaging that will help reach users of this collection. This aligns with one of the PPLD Strategic Plan outcomes: PPLD collections and services will be responsive to community needs and relevant to residents’ lives.
